Angampora
Angampora is one of the most important indigenous martial art in sri lanka.The earliest evidence of angampora martial art is found in a sandesha poem written in the 14th century AD.
There are two generations of angampora, called Sudaliya & Maruwalliya. angampora martial art became more popular in the country from the kotte period to the Kandy era.
The era of king Seethawaka Rajasinhe can be described as the golden age of angampora martial art.
Commander Gotaimbara , Commander Ritigala Jayasena , Commander Veediya Bandara , Jayo bandara , Edaduwawe Manike & Lewke disawa are some of the famous angam fighters in sri lanka.
As the existence of this martial art had a severe adverse effect on this rule, the british government banned Angampora martial art in sri lanka by a special gazette notification in 1818. After the ban, the fighters practiced in secret.
Several traditional angampora fighters still live in the our country. Martyrs such as Anthony Wijesinghe , Senevirsthne Ranaweera , Anuradha Molagoda , guru karunapala & Ajantha Mahantharachchi are prominent among them.
